The Packaging Shelter Guide to getting dimensions right for protection, shipping savings, and customer satisfaction.
Get Expert HelpHello there! As the packaging experts at Packaging Shelter, we know that getting the dimensions of your shipping and product boxes just right is more than just a measurement—it's the key to protecting your products, minimizing shipping costs, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
A box that's too big means wasted material and higher dimensional weight (DIM weight) charges. A box that's too small? Well, that's just a recipe for a damaged product and an unhappy customer!
When you talk to any packaging or shipping carrier, they will always ask for three dimensions, typically in the following order:
Here's how to measure each dimension correctly:
How to measure: This is the longest side of the box opening (the largest dimension of the base).
Tip: If you lay the box flat on a table, the Length is the longest side running left to right.
How to measure: This is the shorter side of the box opening (the smaller dimension of the base).
Tip: This dimension is perpendicular to the Length.
How to measure: This is the distance from the top opening to the bottom of the box.
Tip: This is the vertical dimension when the box is standing upright.
These measurements are critical for determining if your product will fit comfortably inside the box.
These measurements are what carriers use to calculate shipping costs, especially DIM Weight.
When you order your custom boxes from us, let us know if you are providing the exact dimensions of your product (inside) or the maximum external size you can ship (outside). We'll handle the necessary wall thickness calculations!
What if your product isn't a simple cube or rectangle?
Length (L): Measure the length of the cylinder.
Diameter: The space the cylinder takes up is equal to its diameter. So the box's Width and Depth will need to be slightly greater than the diameter.
Tip: Add at least 1/4 inch to the diameter for proper cushioning.
Place the object against a wall. Take a flat surface (like a ruler or book) and touch it to the opposite side of the object, perpendicular to the wall.
Measure the distance from the wall to the flat surface for Length, Width, and Depth to find the minimum rectangular box needed.
Tip: Always add cushioning space for fragile items.
